How to apply putty on glass

Applying putty on glass is usually done when fixing or fitting window glass panes (glazing).

Check the steps below:

1. Clean the Glass & Frame

  • Remove old putty, dust, and paint from the window frame.
  • Wipe the glass edges clean and dry.

2. Prepare the Putty

  • Take a small amount of putty and knead it in your hands until soft and pliable.
  • If it’s too stiff, add a few drops of linseed oil and knead again.

3. Apply Base Layer

  • Roll the putty into a thin rope.
  • Press it firmly into the rebate (groove) of the window frame where the glass will sit.

4. Fix the Glass

  • Place the glass pane gently onto the putty.
  • Press lightly so it beds well.
  • Use glazing points or small nails (if required) to hold the glass in place.

5. Apply Final Putty

  • Apply another rope of putty along the outside edge of the glass.
  • Hold the putty knife at a 45° angle and smooth it neatly along the edge.

6. Smooth the Finish

  • Clean excess putty from the glass using the knife or cloth.
  • Lightly oil the knife for a smooth finish.

7. Drying

  • Let the putty dry for several days (sometimes 1–2 weeks).
  • Once dry, it can be painted.
