Applying putty on glass is usually done when fixing or fitting window glass panes (glazing).
Check the steps below:
1. Clean the Glass & Frame
- Remove old putty, dust, and paint from the window frame.
- Wipe the glass edges clean and dry.
2. Prepare the Putty
- Take a small amount of putty and knead it in your hands until soft and pliable.
- If it’s too stiff, add a few drops of linseed oil and knead again.
3. Apply Base Layer
- Roll the putty into a thin rope.
- Press it firmly into the rebate (groove) of the window frame where the glass will sit.
4. Fix the Glass
- Place the glass pane gently onto the putty.
- Press lightly so it beds well.
- Use glazing points or small nails (if required) to hold the glass in place.
5. Apply Final Putty
- Apply another rope of putty along the outside edge of the glass.
- Hold the putty knife at a 45° angle and smooth it neatly along the edge.
6. Smooth the Finish
- Clean excess putty from the glass using the knife or cloth.
- Lightly oil the knife for a smooth finish.
7. Drying
- Let the putty dry for several days (sometimes 1–2 weeks).
- Once dry, it can be painted.
